spin cycle presents

Spin Cycle Presents is a Los Angeles-based event promotion company founded by Keith Erickson in 2009. Keith created Spin Cycle out of a need for like-minded folks to perform, network, socialize and grow into the vibrant community it is today.

The Spin Cycle @ TRiP series is a monthly eclectic musical showcase featuring popular bands and up and coming live acts looking for exposure, adding a much-desired Northeast improvisational flavor to the West Side of LA. These shows have quickly built a loyal following and become a central hub for Los Angeles' growing jamband and experimental music community

In addition to this popular music series, Spin Cycle has been involved in other high profile events around the LA area, including everal sold out "Cosmik Playground" superjam concerts (featuring members of Umphrey's McGee, Frank Zappa, String Cheese Incident and Digital Tape Machine), Soulshine Daydream Wellness Festival, Shaky Feelin's seminal Album Release Party at the historic Crest Theatre, Mission 24 (a 24-hour underground music festival), the Shakedown Music Series at the Basement Tavern and the live TV broadcast series Birds of a Feather @ Kulaks Woodshed.

The New Mastersounds
2016 was our busiest year to date. Starting in international waters with our fifth appearance on Jamcruise, we played a total of 114 shows in Germany, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, UK, and in 32 of the 50 US states. Our tune "Whistle Song" was used by AVVO in a nationwide TV and online ad campaign. We released our eleventh studio record, The Nashville Session (which also happens to be our fourth live record) and started work on our twelfth. On the side, Pete co-wrote and produced a new original album with drum legend Bernard Purdie, andEddie made a record with Quantic. In New Orleans we played late-night tribute sets to the late, great Allen Toussaint, featuring Ivan Neville, Jon Cleary and Marc Broussard. Eddie performed in Foundation of Funk with Ziggy Modeliste and George Porter Jr of The Meters as well as leading a tribute to Grant Green called Green Is Beautiful, featuring members of the Greyboy All Stars and Soulive. We recorded a single with Brooklyn-based power-funk collective Turkuaz, and then went on tour with them for eight weeks, which was simultaneously exhausting and enormous fun.

2017 promises to be a lot less intense but no less exciting, with more studio writing and recording in February, a Colorado ski tour, more late-night shenanigans in New Orleans, and possible trips to Japan and Hawaii and Spain currently being discussed. Watch this space, or better still: sign up to our email list to stay informed.

Kung Fu: Proud to be firmly installed in the new-funk movement, KUNG FU is quickly popularizing their unique sonic contribution, blurring the line between intense electro-fusion, and blistering dance arrangements.  Making fusion music "cool" again, the band draws on influences such as early Headhunters and Weather Report, and merges those ideas with a contemporary EDM informed sensibility.  Imagine 70's funk-fusion meets a modern dance party!

Dj Williams’ Shots Fired — All Fired Up Series: Sept. 26: Motown on Wax (45-RPM Soul)

In a first-of-its-kind, groundbreaking, four-part series, Dj Williams’ Shots Fired has partnered with Northern California based medical cannabis company, The Legion of Bloom, and LA’s exclusive Alchemy Lounge and Social Club, for a weekly residency that pairs four nights of live music with four different cannabis strains. Participants will be given a complimentary “Monarch” vape pen courtesy of The Legion of Bloom, featuring a cannabis oil cartridge that Legion of Bloom cultivators have carefully curated to match the evening's musical theme. Limited edition means limited supply - product will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

Dj Williams Shots Fired will perform four differently themed shows on four consecutive Tuesdays beginning on September 19. While guitarist, Dj Williams, will lead a different lineup each week, the Shots Fired collective includes members of Dave Matthews Band, Slightly Stoopid, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Greyboy Allstars, Lyric’s Born, Lenny Kravitz, Dr. John and others.

Dj Williams’ Shots Fired — All Fired Up Series:

Sept. 19: Classic ReGrind (Reimagined “hits” of the 80s and 90s)

Sept. 26: Motown on Wax (45-RPM Soul)

October 3: Dabs for Dilla (Putting the J. in your juke joints)

October 10: OG Shots (Live from Over Here)

These special events will be early-evening affairs with no bar on-site; for those interested in drinking during the event, an on-site concierge service is available — BYOB means bring your own bud and booze. A one-day membership to Alchemy Lounge is included with your show ticket, and attendees must be 21+ to enter.

Dj Williams, founder of Shots Fired and guitarist for Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, has brought these alchemical elements together in an open celebration of California culture, following a harrowing 42-day detainment in another country for possession of a tiny amount of cannabis oil. You can read all about it here: http://hightimes.com/news/well-known-guitarist-deported-from-middle-east-for-a-vape-pen/

Let Dj Williams’ Shots Fired get you ALL FIRED UP.

GoGo Penguin

Sat, September 16, 2017

Doors: 8:00 pm / Show: 9:00 pm   $20

It’s been an astonishing couple of years for Manchester based trio GoGo Penguin (drummer Rob Turner, double bassist Nick Blacka and pianist Chris Illingworth). Their trademark mash-up of minimalist piano themes, deeply propulsive bass lines and electronica-inspired drums has seen them shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and fuelled their exhilarating live shows from Manchester to Montreal and Paris to London. They’ve written and performed a new score for Godfrey Reggio’s cult film Koyaanisqatsi and collaborated with noted choreographer Lynn Page for a Gilles Peterson-curated night at the Barbican. And in the midst of all this they’ve signed a multi-album deal with Blue Note Records, the most famous jazz label on earth. Their new album is called Man Made Object and it’s the sound of a band confidently pursuing their own path. “The title is partly inspired by my fascination with ideas of robotics, transhumanism and human augmentation,” says pianist Illingworth. “We’re recreating electronic music on acoustic instruments. It’s like a man-made object that has become humanised and it seemed like a good album title, one that also means something different to each of us, and hopefully to each listener.”

Indeed, although they're predominately an acoustic piano trio, GoGo Penguin’s music draws from many areas of contemporary electronic music, one where you can hear arcade game bleeps, glitchy breakbeats, hypnotic Aphex-style melodies, grinding bass lines and a rumbling low-end. It has been described as “acoustic electronica”, a term which perfectly sums up their modus operandi. “Many of the songs on this album started out as electronic compositions that I made on sequencing software like Logic or Ableton,” says drummer Turner. “I’ll then play it to the band and we’ll find ways of replicating it acoustically.” And it is that ability to synthesis the seemingly disparate influences of electronica, jazz and classical music into their own unique musical DNA that gives GoGo Penguin such an instantly recognisable and compelling sound. One that is set to reach an even wider audience with the release of Man Made Object on February 5 2016.

Heavy funk, driving percussion, energetic horns, somewhere between Brazilian carnaval and Mardi Gras on board the mothership, this is Delta Nove. World funk for your earhole.

Delta Nove’s sound borrows from cultures around the globe, including but not limited to: American funk and rock, Caribbean calypso and reggae, and Brazilian samba drumming. This unique blend of drums, guitars, horns, and electronic colors calls to mind the grooves of Parliament Funkadelic, the horns of Earth Wind and Fire, the diversity of Manu Chao, and the psychedelic improvisation of the Grateful Dead. Delta Nove creates a fresh experience each time; Set lists never repeat, and shows often include surprise guest appearances. This has contributed winning “Best Live Act” for two consecutive years at the Orange County Music Awards and being listed as a “Top Ten Band to See” by Jambase. Additionally, Delta Nove has been on countless national tours and festivals, performing with the likes of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Poncho Sanchez, Burning Spear, Ozomatli, Dr. John, The Funky Meters, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, String Cheese Incident, and more.

The Temporaries have been compared to classic rock legends such as the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and more. They mix together original songs with deep psychedelic  jams. Spin Cycle Presents is excited to welcome this young up and coming band to it's community.

The future of funk is clear on The Motet's new self-released studio album, Totem, which hits streets July 8, 2016. The 12 tracks on Totem, all originals, cover a lot of ground stylistically while never losing sight of the groove. Produced by Lettuce and Soulive guitarist Eric Krasno, Totem was written collectively by the seven members of the band. Each song is steeped in The Motet's signature style that slaps you in the face with sounds that are fresh and unique.

The recent addition of singer Lyle Divinsky, who joined the band in early 2016, fans the flames of this already hot band. His sinfully soulful voice and rich lyrics are powerfully prevalent throughout Totem. "There was a month and a half between the time I joined the band and when we went into the studio," explains Divinsky. "I wound up writing the lyrics and melodies to four songs, and re-wrote the lyrics to two. It gave me and the band an opportunity to really connect musically. We're deeply proud of this album and it's very exciting to have this new material to push out as we begin this next phase of The Motet's journey."

The brilliance of The Motet is that they do not mimic bands of the past, but rather create new, authentic sounds in a language from the past. One might explain the difference like the process of writing a poem in Old English or Aramaic: first, you have to learn the language by digging into the past, then you can express yourself in the present - and say anything you want - using that language.

No matter how you choose to express funk, you can't fake it - and you sure as hell can't play it - if you don't know where to find it.

Just how did The Motet find the funk? Simply put, they dissected it. "We have put together funk-themed Halloween shows for the past fifteen years, where we pay tribute to a particular artist or play a 'Mixtape' set of music culled from a certain year," shares Dave Watts.

Past Halloween cover sets have included tributes to Herbie Hancock, Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Parliament-Funkadelic and many others. Recent tribute shows have celebrated a particular year in music, with 'Mixtape' sets from 1975, 1977, and 1980. "Preparing for these shows are intense, and we take it very seriously. Each year it gives us an incredible opportunity to not just learn, but to understand, the art of funk – both as individual players and as a band." These shows, which have become a beloved live music tradition and sell out each year, have also offered a unique (and rowdy) opportunity for the band's fans to join them in their ongoing exploration of creative, live dance music.

The Motet began in 1998 in Denver, Colorado, where the band's then-rotating cast of musicians amassed an enthusiastic and loyal throng of hometown fans. The Motet took their infectious dance parties on the road about three years ago, and their national fan base has been growing exponentially ever since. Today their shows sell out from coast to coast at such venues as Red Rock's Amphitheatre, Brooklyn Bowl, Chicago's Park West, The Independent in San Francisco, Tipitina's in New Orleans, Portland's Crystal Ballroom, and Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. A favorite along the festival circuit, The Motet has performed at Electric Forest, Summer Camp, All Good Music Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, Bonnoroo, Peach Fest and many others.

The Motet are Dave Watts (drums), Joey Porter (keyboards), Garrett Sayers (bass), Ryan Jalbert (guitar), Gabriel Mervine (trumpet), Lyle Divinsky (vocals), Drew Sayers (saxophone).

Groundhogs JAM feat Puscie Jones Revue, Quactus & Blooming Fire

The groundhog plays a little game.
(Woodchuck is his other name.)

But if he sees his shadow small,
Winter isn't done at all,
And back into his hole he'll creep
For six more weeks of winter sleep.

No matter what the weather outside on FEB 2nd, it will be a hot mess insideTRiP Santa Monica, packed with dancing "children" young and old, drinks flowing and laughter in the air. What a fantastic showcase we have in store for you!
